Niall Duffy was born in Donegal, Ireland. Growing up on the north-west coast of rural Ireland, he developed a keen interest in film from an early age. Inspired by Irish history and compelled by the captivating landscape surrounding him, he formed a desire to tell unique and original stories.
His inaugural short film, THE ROCK IN THE SEA, is a period piece set in medieval Ireland featuring two Celtic monks on an isolated island, confronting fears of grief, despair, and identity. Filmed in the aftermath of a national lockdown, it has to date received 39 international awards.
GALAR explores the impact of a neglected housing crisis on individuals, focusing on Michael Gallagher, a character emblematic of homeowners navigating this crisis. Michael confronts the physical deterioration of his home due to defective blocks, as well as his declining health and the emotional strain on his family. Set against the backdrop of Donegal’s rugged beauty, this story offers a personal and intimate portrayal of resilience, community, and the fight for justice.
My intention with GALAR is to bring to light the personal stories behind the headlines. The defective block crisis is not just a news item, it is a daily reality for many families, filled with frustration, fear, and uncertainty. Through Michael’s eyes, we experience the weight of these struggles and the small victories that come with unwavering determination. The film does not offer easy solutions or neatly tied-up endings because life rarely does.
My aim is to evoke empathy and understanding, urging the audience to reflect on their own experiences with hardship and the importance of standing together in difficult times.
