SOMA is an experimental film that uses movement and dance as its primary medium for story-telling. A contemporary myth on the genesis of the human body, the piece unfolds in two parallel dimensions: an infinite black hole where entities exist outside linear space and time; and a labyrinthine house where an uncanny gathering is taking place. As the free-associative, dreamlike narrative unfolds, different characters go through visceral experiences of pleasure, enchantment, pain and death.
Director Biography – Arturo Bandinelli
Arturo Bandinelli is an experimental film director, researcher and psychoanalyst in formation. In his creative and academic research, he investigates the relationship between subjectivity and otherness, knowledge and truth, sexual politics and the body. His graduation sci-fi short film Otto Floss: Freelance Watcher (2014) acquired international recognition including screenings at the European Independent Film Festival (France), London Sci-Fi Film Festival (UK), and Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (France). In recent years, Arturo started working on experimental formats in collaboration with choreographers, dancers, visual and performance artists. His most recent award-winning experimental short films include Walls of Limerick (2019) and Viscera: Autopsy of a (non)Human Body (2021).
Production Company & Choreography
KWAM Collective is a London based artist-led group, co-directed by Klaudia Wittmann, Ana Meireles and Esme Rocha-Benjamin. The collective has conducted various multidisciplinary artistic works over the last decade, bringing together dance theater and film, exploring questions of the body, trauma and society. Our artistic and community-focused projects have been supported by UK art organizations including East London Dance, ECHO, Redbridge Drama Centre, London Studio Centre, Abderrahim Crickmay Charitable Settlement, The Place, Royal Philharmonic Society and Arts Council England.
